Tall, and slender, and proud I had stood
As far as the eye could see.
My vast expanse held small specks of gold
Yet much depended on me.
My gold absorbed the rays of the sun
Which was pleasant on my skin.
My treasure trove continued to grow
Despite myself being thin.
My growth of gold had puffed up my pride
Which in turn then brought me harm,
Since my gold was the sustaining life
For those living on the farm.
The sun that once had helped me to grow,
Encouraged me to abound,
Then scorched me with those terrible rays
Beat on me and all the ground.
I was brought low and cut from my root,
My slender skin crisp and dried.
Ravaged, split, and crumbled was I
And striped of my golden pride.
Rightly it is said, “The grass withers”
and “Pride comes before a fall”.
To look at me now, would you have known
I once stood so straight and tall?
I now, who once filled the field with gold,
Must guard it ‘til day is done;
Not with grain, but the farmers old clothes,
Do I stand under the sun.
May I now humbling serve my master;
Faithfully do what I should.
No longer seeking myself to raise
Working only for his good.
Golden Pride
